PROFILE OF THE COLLEGE
Attappady is the sole tribal block in Kerala, comprising 10530 tribal households living in 192 hamlets who belong to three categories known as Irular, Mudugar and Kurumbar spread across three Panchayaths, namely, Pudur, Agali and Sholayur. Attappady block of Palakkad district is an immediate neighbour to Tamil Nadu and is a hospitable land of settlers in general and settled farmers in particular. The Block, however, is an admixture of both good and bad climate for husbandry. It is an extensive mountain valley with Bhavani and Siruvani rivers flowing to eastern side and that Varagar also is a potent and perennial source of water. Geographically, Attappady is a riveting landscape thanks to its enviable presence of mountains, hills, valleys, rivers and rivulet. On the western side, the Anamooli region adjacent to Mannarkkad and on the eastern side Tamil Nadu are the pathways and borders to Attappady. The place is also an amalgam of three types of weathers viz rain shadow in the eastern region, rainy and chilly climate in the western region and mixed climate in the central region. The breathtakingly beautiful Silent Valley National Park adds new gem to Attappady.
Rajive Gandhi Memorial Government College is the sole college home to around 150 tribal students who are from outside Attappady block. Established in the 2nd August 2012 at the AVIP guest house of Agali with 40 students for each degree course, the college is now functioning at Kottathara having 4 under graduate courses viz Public Administration, History, Malayalam and Commerce and 1 post graduate course in Public Administration. The courses B.Sc Botony and B.Sc Zoology shall soon be initiated soon after the amenities for the laboratory kick off at the earliest. A total of 649 students are currently studying in the college. The College stands aloof in the sense that it has exclusive 10 reserved seats for the admission of tribal students which is expected to fructify the futuristic academic aspirations of the tribal students. Notwithstanding the fact that the College is temporarily working in a building, the construction works under the aegis of KIIFB of a new academic block, gents and ladies hostel, canteen and principal quarters are in the pipeline.
